Due to some requests, I have decided to go ahead and restructure the blog. This will serve as the home page of the blog. Of course, there will be some days before the whole exercise is completed. I hope to have an efficient navigation system in place soon.

i have been on the yamunotri route when i was a kid. it is much mre developed now..i hear. probably the best place to get information in the garhwal mandal vikas nigam. u can ask them about it...

It is sad to see that most of us show our concern only vocally.

I have planned for a tour to kumaon with my family(Self,Wife and a boy of 6 yrs) in first week of Nov. I will start from Kathgodam and materialise the tour via Mukteshwar, Binsar, Chaukori, Kausani, nainital and back via Kathgodam. I have booked hotels at Peora for 1st night, Binsar KMVN for 2nd night, Chaukori KMVN for 3rd, Kausani for 4th and 5th, Nainital for 6th and 7th nights serially. I will hire a car throughout the tour of the abovementioned places. I would like to know whether it will be possible to reach Binsar KMVN by 4PM if I start from Peora at 9AM, then to Almora - jageswar and finally to Binsar. Can it be done comfortably with stopovers at Almora, Jageswar and at the temples on the road. Please comment.

ReplyDeletePeora is on the narrow motorable road from Mukteshwar to Almora. What I came to know is that Peora is a small village which is around 8 Km from Mukteshwar. The local people may call it as Pera or Pura. The hotel persons say that Peora to Almora is around 25 Km. I have chosen Peora based on the feedbacks on the net. They say it has a better view of himalaya in comparison to Mukteshwar. Anyway how will be the weather in the 1st week of Nov? May we get a clear sky at Chaukori or Binsar? Yesterday I talked to the person for a car which you mentioned in one of your blogs. Nice man. I will finalise the deal within some days. Hope for a reply.

ReplyDeleteWeather in the hills is always unpredictable. But there are good chnaces of finding a clear sky in november. Also, always remember, that the higher mountain peaks will be surrounded by clouds after around 10 am. so early morning (till 10 am) and late evenings (after sunset) are the times to get the best views. ReplyDeleteFrom Ranikhaet...I think you should get yourself to Almora. From there you can hire taxi/jeep for Munsyari.
Now, from Munsyari to Kathgodam/Delhi/....A bus leaves at around 4 am or 4:30 in the morning. It reaches Kathgodam at almost 5:30 pm. So from Kathgodam, or evn Haldwani bus stop, you can catch a bus to Delhi.
Also, one bus leaves directly for Delhi, via Kathgodam, at around the same time...4:00 am. But I guess that it will be a very long bus journey..from Munsyari to Delhi non stop. phew.
And in the hills, it is 1000 times safer for gals to travel. It is in places liek Delhi and the plains that you have to be careful of devious ppl. The pahadi ppl r generally pretty simple n well behaved.

I am visiting India this summer and I will have about 4 days starting July 1 that I look forward to spending by myself exploring the area. I plan to take the night train to Kathgodam and then hire a car (solo or shared) to go explore. I would like to spend more time in one place than little time in many places so I can get a little time to soak in the experience and the people. With such limited time and the threat of looming monsoons, my dilemma is the following:
Should I:
1. go all the way to Munsiyari even if it takes all day travel - assuming the closer views will be worth it OR
2. go up to Chaukori and stay in the cabins for 2 days OR
3. go to Binsar for 2 days
... or some other suggestion?...
I know that rain is the wildcard here... but wondering if you could share your thoughts on this?

ReplyDeleteLeave from kathgodam in the morning. Stop at the kainchi temple. have neembu-paani from the person who sells it right in front of the temple. it is the best lemonade in the whole world..and i am not joking.
enjoy the singhodee and baal mithai of almora. then visit jageshwar. then go to chaukori. on the way, stop at dhaul chinna. enjoy pahadi lunch ta hill view restaurant..very clean and very hygenic.

Yes, there were some hostels, etc for ppl to stay when i was there in Sari village. deoriya tal is a small walk from Sari. So you just need to stay at Sari and go up to the tal and come back. in fact, we did Chopta, tungnath, chandrashila and deoriya tal in the same day and were back in augustmuni for dinner.

Just a request, kindly stictly urge your readers who are motivated by your blog to travel to Uttarakhand, that they must preserve the sanctity of the place by all means. People simply pollute. It's just not they smoke and throw cigg. butts, or eats chips and throw the plastic bags everywhere. People are so wretched to spit tobacco everywhere, write on age old stones and so on.
Kindly also apprise them of other travel etiqquettes and be sensitive to our people in Uttarakhand and our flora and fauna. People drive fast, often wrecklessly, blow vehicle horn loudly, with high beam in the night (which can be very dangerous in mountains)tease locals, and so on. These are just a few side-effects of increased tourism.
May be you can tell them that uttarakhand is devbhoomi and people should approach it with prayerfulness.
People must come to Uttarakhand to know and understand nature and the beautiful way in which the local respect and depend on nature.
It gives me gitters to tell people of the beautiful places in uttarakhand because I fear it will then turn into a typical India gate of delhiites, where people come, sit down, eat and drink and leave a long trail of garbage when they get up.
Most of the wretched Indians don't deserve to know about our abode of Gods - Our Uttarakhand.

Hi...Excellent pics boss. I am planning for honeymoon in jan to kumaon covering Binsar(2 nights)-Chakouri(2 nights)-Munsiyari(2 nights)-Kausani(2 nights)-Nainital(??) over 12 days. I am interested to know your itinerary of your honeymoon trip to eastern kumaon if you don't mind. coz I am not sure how many days/nights to spend at each of these places. Please suggest me whether I should stay more at chakouri/munsiyari. I like going for small 4-5 hr treks.

ReplyDeleteBinsar - you can stay only at KMVN I guess. Ans then roam around in the forests.
In almora, I have't been to Imperial. The TRC is a decent middle class option and Shikhar is the only 3 star hotel in town.
Stop and stay ta Chaukori between Binsar and Munsyari.
In Munsyari, if you can, try to trek to Khalia top. Then visit the Nanda Devi temple from where you can get a clean view of the Panchchuli peaks.
Finally, if you have a few days extra, try to visit Munsyari-Jauljibi-Dharchula-Narayan Ashram.
The weather will be pleaqsant, unless it is hit by some unseasonal cold spell.
I don't think that you will find snow in Munsyari in March 1st week. Howevr, there might be some snow left in Khalia, if there is some late winter snowfall.
The drivers will try to rob you. Try to pay them below Rs. 1000 per day + petrol. Anything above 1000 is very expensive. Try to bargain to 700 or 800.

The route is from Doon - mussoorie. There is another one from Dehradun-vikasnagar. Haridwar-rishikesh would be in the opposite direction.

Can you check, amend, and give me your comments on how to utilize the time and distance best to cover these places? In case the time required from one-place say (Almora to Chaukori) takes more time then I do not mind skipping it for the next time. I have 6 days after I reach Kathgodam and would like to reach on the 6th day evening back to Kathgodam.
My Itinerary not necessarily is exact. Some places can be deleted or shifted.
Kathgodam - Muketeshwar - Almora - Binsar - Kasar Devi - Choukori - Punchchuli - Munsyari - Kausani - Kathgodam.
I would appreciate if you can mention the distance between each of the places. I wish not to travel more than 2hrs at a stretch due to age factor and family along.

ReplyDeleteThis is a bit too much for 6 days. You can skip Kausani. Try something like this ->
Day 1 ->
Start from KATHGODAM in the morning. Go to Mukteshwar. Check out the place. Then go to Almora to spend the night there.
Day 2->
Check out Binsar and Kasar devi near Almora outskirts.
Day 3->
Go from Almora to Chaukori. Leave in the morning. Stop for meal at Dhaulchinna (Hill view restaurant). Drink buraansh juice to refresh yourselves. There is a great view from just after the toll point on the road.
Day 4->
Go from Chaukori to Munsyari. Stop to check the waterfalls at Birthi and the view from Betulidhaar.
Day 5->
Spend at Munsyari. Check out the nanda devi temple and the
Day 6->
Leave for Kathgodam. Reach Kathgodam by evening.
Now Day 5 and Day 6 are entirely upto you. If you think you cannot travel full day on Day 6, then you can leave Munsyari on Day 5 itself.
I would advice to go there and enjoy, rather than sticking to a fixed plan. Maybe you might like Chaukori so much that you will decide to spend the rest of the holidays there itself.

Howdy, why don't you try places around Nainital, like Binsar, etc? in nainital, you can try to check out the usual spots like snow view, tiffin top, etc. In almora, you can get close to nature in places like Binsar. If you want a good taxi, ring up tiwari ji (i have put his contact on the contact details page). he can also help make an itinerary for you. cheers.

ReplyDeleteHello Abhishek ji, do you like close-to-nature places? I can give you suggestions on the Chaukori area and Dharchula/Munsyari area for a long trip .... but away from the touristy circuit. So it involves village home stays, etc. I think that is a lot more fun than staying in the standard touristy places. Let me know if you are interested and I will provide the info. Also, if you and your spouse are interested in a bit of climbing, seeing the old (non-touristy temples), old style pahadi villages, etc, etc, then just tell me and I will send you a sample plan.

First of all, thank you so much for your prompt reply. Your idea of trip is exactly how I would like it to be. I am someone who loves nature and would want to 'get lost' from this selfish world. I have already booked my train tickets to and from Kathgodam. I will be reaching Kathgodamn on the 8th Septemeber morning around 9 (Bagh express from Lucknow to Kathgodam) and I have to board the same train again on the 15th night. I have also spoken to Tiwari ji who will be picking me from the railway station for the trip.
Please put together a plan for me. I am already too excited about the plan. I would be grateful if you can also put it in itinerary format (You can ignore this request if its asking for too much).

1. Is there chance of snow being there at Auli.
2. I wish to go to Chopta then. Where should we stay? Is trek to Tungnath possible? I mean, we adults can do it very well, but kids are in age group of 5 to 7 years. Can they do it. They all walk well.
3. What other places would you recommend us to stay in the area around Chopta or Auli?

ReplyDeleteThe time you mentioned is later March, so it will already be post winter. The chances are less but we cannot predict accurately for March as that is just too far away. Predicting something even one week away is tough in the Himalayas.

Around Chopta - Deoria tal is another good option.
ReplyDeleteFor trekking up to Chandrashila peak, if you leave Chopta early in the morning, you shouldbe back by lunch time. There were some basic dhabas at Chopta which provided a bed to stay in (and also mobile charger).
